MESA and SacYELS SacYELS (Sacramento Youth Empowerment League for Service Learning) is an emerging organization started by high school students to complete long term service learning projects they begin in high school. The emerging organization was born in an Environmental Science class at Arthur A. Benjamin Health Professions High School (AABHPHS) with the support of MESA and the Sacramento City Unified Career and Technical Preparation Department and is now expanding to any student in the Sacramento City Unified School District who wants to participate. History:The students at AABHPHS wanted the MESA organization on campus, so they approached their Physics teacher, Dana Jenks, to be their advisor. She agreed and the MESA organization added the school to its roster of participating schools. The first year MESA was a lunch time and after school on Friday activity. The students wanted more, so the Career and Technical Prep department helped to fund a class. The class included the Students Fueling Students program, also a Career and Technical Prep inspired and sponsored program, and was accepted by California State University Sacramento as an ACE course, so students could get college credit. The course offered students an opportunity to participate in service learning projects. Some of the projects could not be completed in a year, or even four years for some, so SacYELS was born. Included on this website are long term projects for AABHPHS and for the new SacYELS site George Washington Carver School of Arts and Science or Carver for short.
