The HPHS Garden has had some ups and downs. The garden was planted and then the district gardners accidentally sprayed the plants with
Round-up. We replanted with the help of master gardner Bill Maynard. We discovered that the plants were not getting enough water and
the soil was in bad shape, so we applied some worm castings and sheet mulch and increased the watering time. The plants grew, but alas
we did not have control over the water. The over watering has suffocated our plants. We let the district know that the water needed to
be turned down, but the schedule was not changed, so we did not get the yield we wanted. However, we learned about soil horizons and the
importance of hummus and water for soil tilth. We also learned that we need control of our water in order to make the garden
successful. |
