Students Fueling Students (SFS)SFS is a program. that gets middle school students excited about continuing on in science by having high school students teach middle school science standards using the Thames and Kosmos fuel cell car kits. The program was started by the Sacramento City Unified Career and Technical Preparation Department with seed money from Intel. Since its inception, we have talked with nearly 4,000 middle school students. Many have decided to enter science programs in high school. The program has also encouraged high school students to consider more Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fields. The founding member Shalveena Dayal has now graduated in Engineering and has encouraged quite a few other girls to go into engineering programs. Nearly 30% of our SFS student presenters that have graduated from high school are now in or graduated from engineering programs at CSUS and engineering programs as far as McMasters University in Canada.
Pakistani Health and Education AidMuzammil Afzal and his sister Farheen Afzal were interested in the chapter about Human Population in their Environmental Science text and noticed that the topics were very true of their family's ancestral home of Pakistan. They learned that the UN Millennium Development Goals focused on health and education. They decided to go and do something about what they learned. In April 2009, they went with their teacher, Dana Jenks, and surveyed the needs of three hospitals and three schools. Current needs for this project include computer equipment to video conference between a Pakistani and Dana Jenks' clsses. There is a dire need for basic medication. If you want to learn more, please email Dana Jenks at dana@jenks.us. |
